Discussion Points

  • A common actionable practice is to prioritize your projects, not everything you work on has the same payoff when it is finished. You can prioritize by due date, and by the size of the project. We tend to put off the bigger projects for the smaller ones for quicker gratification. I like to break the big projects into small check point, and celebrate each check point with something, a dance treats, etc.
  • Give yourself an action plan for the project, it’s doesn’t need to be super specific, but it does need to outline check points, that will indicate the completion of a phase. This not only keeps you in check and aware that your moving forward, but can also be shared with your client and it will give them a sense of comfort and trust that they are in good hands
  • Stay organized!!! You want to keep your information, be it meeting notes, sketches, contracts, invoices, etc, in one location for ease of access. If a project get derailed you want to be able to pick back up where you left things with ease, or can back to through your process, or project spec for clarity and direction for your work.
  • Everything takes longer that you think, so be prepared for that, from responses and feedback, to prints runs, life happens. A technic is to not set hard dates on project timelines, deliverables or check-ins, wiggle room is required in the creative profession.
  • Very often we as creatives want to be in control of everything, and that can be a mistake sometimes it’s best to bring in someone else to help with a project. Sub-contract! Play to your strength, doing everything your self is rough! Sometimes it may not be avoidable so…Ask for help from a spouse or sibling, or maybe as mentioned sub-contract
  • Say no, your entire business, your success it all depends on your reputation!
