This time David’s under the weather…*tears*, Paula and Dwayne get into the sensitive nature of firing a client.

Discussion Points

Reasons to fire a client…

  • They make unreasonable demands and requests
Example: Constant last minute changes and requests that are not with the scope of the project.
Tip: Ensure that you stay firm with the requirements of the project and your contract is key!
  • They want everything for nothing
Example: When a client is overly pushing about price from the start, that’s a red flag big time!
Tip: Stay firm on your rate, always negotiate the time and scope of the project, never your rate
  • Slow to Pay
Tip: Again, your contract is key payment clauses are necessary, give reminders but also remind that that after 15or 30 days which is standard practice, it begins to grow interest, no one wants to pay interest!
  • They don’t listen to you
Tip: You are the professional, they have come to you for your expertise, if the push back is too strong, your going to end up with work you can’t be proud of it. Remember each piece over is your next client!
Voice your opinion respectfully, complete your work, and be smart enough to move on, even if they pay well, the quality of the relationship is much more important for long term success.

Things to consider before you fire a client…

  • Firing will not be in breach of your contract
  • The long-term value of the client vs your business goals, make sure it’s worth it
  • Is there anything that you are doing, or could do differently to not have to fire, while maintaining integrity for yourself
